BioStruct-X in a Nutshell

31 May 2016

BioStruct-X is a project funded by the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) of the European Commission.
The project was running from September 1st 2011 until February 29th 2016 as a pan-European initiative that grouped 19 research organisations from 11 EU member and associated states aiming to provide integrated support for X-ray based structural biology applications.

Through BioStruct-X transnational access activities 1156 scientific projects and 1991 users (of those, 39% female scientists and 48% users younger than 35 years of age) received support that already resulted in over 340 publications in peer-reviewed journals (http://www.biostructx.eu/content/publications).

During the 54 months of the project, a total of 18936 beamtime hours of access on biological small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), macromolecular X-ray crystallography (MX) and biological X-ray imaging (XI) beamlines across Europe has been provided to the users from the EU and associates states.

In Workpackage 5, BioStruct-X supported user access was provided to 9 complementary, highly automated platforms for protein production and crystallization located at 4 synchrotron sites in Europe (France, Germany, United Kingdom and Switzerland). A high level of demand for user access to Protein production and High-throughput crystallisation platforms (PP&HTX) resulted in over-delivery of units in 7 out of 9 available platforms.

In summary, BioStruct-X has brought together leading European research organisations in a successful effort to build a broad platform of infrastructures addressing all stages of biological structure determination, from protein production of sufficient quantity and quality for structure analysis, to sample production and data collection by a variety of X-ray methods (macromolecular crystallography, small-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray imaging). In doing so, BioStruct-X became a role model for related projects within the ESFRI roadmap and future I3-related projects in HORIZON 2020.
