EMBL Hamburg MX Beamlines

EMBL maintains and operates two undulator beamlines (P13 and P14) for Macromolecular Crystallography (MX) experiments on PETRA III at DESY in Hamburg (Germany).

P13 will initially offer a beam 80 µm (H) x 40 µm (V) @ FWHM (30 µm (H) x 20 µm (V) @ FWHM final) with a small divergence and tunable over a wavelength range from 0.7 to 2.5 Å. The beamline will be particularly suited for phasing experiments on crystals with large unit cells. P13 is currently under constructions; user operation is planned to begin in the second half of 2012.

Beamline features on P13 will include:

  • Bimorph mirrors for adjustment of focus size and position (from July 2012)
  • MD2 goniostat with < 2 µm sphere of confusion
  • Mini-Kappa goniometer for crystal orientation
  • Cryo-cooling System (Oxford Instruments Cryojet XL )
  • Fluorescence Detector (Amptek XR-100SDD)
  • MARVIN Robotic Sample Changer
  • Remote Access (from October 2012)
  • AutoRickshaw for structure determination

P14 will initially offer a small beam of 20 µm (V) x 40 µm (H) @ FWHM (final 1 µm (V) x 5 µm (H) tunable over a wavelength range from 0.4 to 1.7 Å. The small beam size in combination with the high-precision vertical rotation axis will provide excellent condition for diffraction experiments with small crystals.
User operation on P14 began in April 2012.

Beamline features on P14 will include:

  • bimorph mirrors for adjustment of focus size and position (from May 2012)
  • MD3 vertical goniostat with < 500 nm sphere of confusion
  • Mini-Kappa goniometer for crystal orientation
  • Cryo-cooling System (Oxford Instruments Cryojet XL )
  • Fluorescence Detector (Amptek XR-100SDD)
  • High efficiency CCD Detector (Rayonix 225HE)
  • MARVIN Robotic Sample Changer
  • Remote Access (from July-2012)
  • AutoRickshaw for structure determination

 

The DORIS beamlines X11, X12 and X13 are no longer operational. The final shutdown of DORIS was on the 22nd October 2012.

X11 is one of EMBL Hamburg’s DORIS-III beamlines for Macromolecular Crystallography (MX) experiments and is closely related to beamline X13. It is a fixed wavelength beamline (0.81 Å; 15.3 keV).  Beamline features include:

  • Mar555 detector
  • Cryo-annealing paddle

X12 is one of EMBL Hamburg’s DORIS-III beamlines for Macromolecular Crystallography (MX) experiments, tunable over a wavelength range of 0.7 - 2.1 Å and has a standard working energy of 1.051 Å or 11.8 keV.
Beamline features include:

  • Mar225 detector
  • Bruker/AXS (formerly Roentec) PX-XFlash energy-sensitive X-ray fluorescence detector

X13 is one of EMBL Hamburg’s DORIS-III beamlines for Macromolecular Crystallography (MX) experiments and is closely related to beamline X11. It is a fixed wavelength beamline (0.81 Å; 15.3 keV).  Beamline features include:

  • Mar165 detector
  • DNA strategy prediction
  • Microspectrophotometer
